If you’ve been “down” before or “fallen” before. You really don’t need to read this. This is just going to be a bunch of stuff you already know.

First thing you need to know is the difference between custody levels. You have GREEN which is where I spent most of my time. That’s the lowest level. Or the level with the most freedom. Then you have BROWN which is medium all the way up to close custody. I don’t know much about that stuff. I spent a short amount of time in brown clothes medium custody just for processing. Processing is when you go and get HIV test and they give you IQ tests and all these bullshit tests to see if you’re a drug addict. Real fun.

After you finished processing you’ll go to either another brown clothes camp or a green clothes camp depending on your charge, amount of time you have to serve and the number of “points” you have on your record. The points has something to do with previous charges and the level of crime you commited and I think your age is factored in there somewhere. Not too sure how that formula goes. I think they keep that shit a secret.

Now no matter what level of custody you end up in keep this in mind. EVERY prison camp you go to is different. No two prisons in the state of north carolina are run the same. That shit will blow you away. How you can do somethings on this camp but not on another. I did a few months at Terrell County Prison work farm. Way out in the cut. I hated it. Not that there was much to love about prison but it really sucked. I’m from Raleigh so to be way out there was a hassle. The phone calls cost like 5 bucks from that shit hole to Raleigh.

I was sent there for DART. That stands for Drug Alcohol Recovery Treatment. I guess I didn’t do to good at the drug screening tests in processing. After I finished DART I was allowed to pick any camp I wanted to go to. So I went with Wake County Correctional. Which is located right in the heart of Raleigh. Nice I was back home and could make phone calls for less than a dollar a call.

How to Stay Safe in Prison

1. First on the list is stay the fuck off of that basketball court. I don’t give a fuck if you think you’re michael jordan. There’s no need to be on the court. More fights go down out there then anywhere else. Also and more importantly accidents happen there. You could accedently get elbowed to the mouth and four of your teeth fall out. I saw it happen. I can tell you this too. They will NOT put your teeth back in. They will give you Advil and tell you to go lie down.
2. Don’t worry about what’s on that TV. The tv room is another place where arguments go down. If there is a show on that you want to watch when you go in there then cool. You can watch it. But don’t expect that shit to stay on. Who knows somebody might just get up and turn that shit.
3. READ. Read your ass off. It keeps you out of trouble and will help you to kill a lot of time. Plus nobody fucks with the guy sitting on his bed reading trying to better himself. You’d be surprised how fast time goes by when you’re reading. The years just melt away.
4. If you’re intelligent. Learn to dumb it down a few notches. It’s not the strongest or the smartest creatures that survive. It’s the ones that best adapt to their ever changing environments. You’ll be surrounded by some of the biggest idiots the state on NC has to offer. And they’ll all be crammed into a little area. Avoid the real idiots and just agree with them when they say some dumb shit. Really you can’t help these people so don’t even try.
5. This last one has to do with you’re own metal health. Don’t ever worry or think too much about what’s going on in that world. You’re no longer a part of it and you have absolutely no control over it. IF you had a girlfriend before you went in, just consider that bitch gone. If you brother is out there fucking up consider that gone too. There is absolutely nothing you can do. Worrying is only going to drive you insane. So just don’t do it.
